I am not aware of LA making any official recommendations, which I think is the
best practice.

But I (not being a member of LA council or in any other way representing LA)
am happy to say that fosstodon.org seems like a decent server and should do
the job well if someone gets an account there.

I still recommend the NZOSS server, I don't have evidence that it is better
than other servers (I have not used any other server for an account) but I use
it and have found it to work quite well enough. It is run by a reliable group
of people and is unlikely to disappear. It is a little slow sometimes but
probably all servers with more than a few users have that happen.

But mostly I recommend that people just try it out. If the first server you
try doesn't work in the way you desire then you can try another. You really
only learn these things by using them.
