Hello,

Thanks for your response. While I certainly can't guarantee the organisation won't have challenges, our biggest problem at the moment is coordinating all the people who want to help rather than a shortage! The organisation was founded in October last year so we've actually just survived our first six months :)

We're putting a lot of effort into getting the foundations right as we're seriously committed to this. You can find some further information on the Board we have established here (http://openfoodweb.org/foundation/about-us/). We have also now been accepted as a registered Australian Tax Concession Charity, which opens up a range of funding options. We are pursuing a number of other funding options as well (including crowd-funding and memberships), but are conscious of really needing a clear online community to direct interested people to and get them involved. Our strategy is volunteers and professional / paid development to get established and we are working on all of this.

Thanks again -
Kirsten

On 11 April 2013 10:18, Nathan Bailey <nathan.bailey@monash.edu> wrote:

My major question relates to the organisation's sustainability, ie. being a new organisation, how can we be sure that this essentially "up front" investment will translate into meaningful outcomes?

As a contrast, investing in an organisation or activity that has a track record is a far easier decision, eg. BarCamp has run successfully a number of times, supporting them for their next event is very likely to translate into similar benefits as previous events.

With a new social enterprise, a significant amount of the future of the organisation is based on goodwill and interest from volunteers. It's possible that LinuxAU could do its bit, but that the organisation itself could flounder after 6 months?

Secondly, please find attached some information about our new organisation (the Open Food Web Foundation) and a request for some support to get established.

More information is in the attached document, but in summary we are an Australian non-profit, established in October 2012 with the express aim to develop, accumulate and protect open source knowledge, code, applications and platforms for fair and sustainable food systems.

We are requesting assistance from Linux Australia, in the form of:

Infrastructure - potential VPS hosting of the OFW Foundation collaborative community, as well as production and development applications of Open Food Network software and sys admin support if possible / appropriate; and

$2,000 for developer time to translate and set-up the CollabCo system for our organisation. We will then have a collaborative online space from which to build the Open Food Web Foundation community and projects (see attached explanation).

We anticipate that the second item would be completed and launched within two months. We will prominently acknowledge Linux Australia as a partner on the website and provide the link to the Linux user group.

Thanks to those who have provided guidance and support so far, and we look forward to comments and suggestions from others

Regards,
Kirsten
Director, Open Food Web Foundation
