Howdy,<br>
<br>
All this idea and all of the discussion around it is really
excellent. Thanks for taking the initiative on this Tim.<br>
<br>
The council will be sure to discuss it next week at out meeting.<br>
<br>
In the mean time, some quick thoughts that I've had.<br>
- I agree that smaller teams allow for effective decision making
but how will a smaller team take onboard the input from the wider
community (we've already seen hands go up from lugs and previous
organisers).<br>
- This leads to do you propose a leader for the subcommittee?
Somebody responsible for making things happen.<br>
- What resources do you need for this initially. Primarily I'm
imagining a mailing list and some compute power until you put in a
grant request for hardware?<br>
- What are the initial tangible outcomes. Is it primarily focusing
around documentation that can then be used to support other
conferences?<br>
<br>
Cheers,<br>

<div><br>
</div>
<div>One of the biggest hassles LCA and other conference
organisers have to deal with is how to record and possibly
stream their event. This is however a very important step as it
furthers Linux Australia's goal to provide benefit to the whole
of Australia, not just those who are able to attend the
conferences. The process of reinventing the wheel every year
means the problem hasn't been getting easier. There is also no
reason this has to be a huge hassle, we have a number of people
in the community who know how to make this process painless and
how to do it affordably. For this reason,<b> I'd like to propose
the creation of a "Video Recording and Streaming subcommittee"</b>
(VRS?).</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>The subcommittee's job would be to "facility LCA, other LA
events, and LUGS to do top-notch recording and streaming". This
would be done by providing both in-person and online consulting
to the conference teams; including things such as
recommendations of vendors; advice on setup, and volunteer
training. They would also be in charge of managing an inventory
of devices and parts purchased to facility this job plus
administration of any servers which would be used. Finally, the
subcommittee would be in charge of development of software and
hardware tools which fit the goal and make life easier through
requesting grant funding (similar to the ZooKeeper committee).</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>I'm suggesting that the initial team be created with the
following members;</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Ryan Verner - Has done PyCon AU and Drupal DownUnder
through his NextDayVideo company.</li>
<li>Tim Ansell - Developed the streaming system used by LCA in
Ballarat and PyCon US. Currently shepherding projects to
modernise video recording tools.</li>
<li>Paul Wayper - A/V coordinator for LCA in Canberra.</li>
<li>James Bromberger - A/V coordinator for PLUG and possibly
LCA in Perth.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>Further members can be added, but I personally would like to
keep the subcommittee small to allow for fast, effective
decision making.</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Thanks for your time.</div>
