Howdy,
Linux Australia has been around for over ten years and we are no longer an
organisation focussed mainly on Linux and running LCA each year. All of our
members use or contribute to open source projects in one form or another. Linux
Australia has also become involved in open source and open culture events that
are not specifically related to Linux.
We think it is time for us to change the name of our organisation to have it
more accurately represent the focus of our community.
The council wants the community to discuss this potential name change and if
required, an appropriate name. One name that seems to accurately reflect our
shared values and our direction is Open Source Australia.
What we would like to hear from you, the membership, is your feeling about such
a name change and if this particular suggested name doesn't resonate with you,
is there one that's a better fit?
Linux.conf.au is our largest and longest running conference and we don't
believe we need to change its name. The reputation and wide recognition of the
LCA brand is important to the future of linux.conf.au.
We also don't intend to relinquish the Linux Australia brand or the
linux.org.au domain name. They will be useful during the transition to another
name and we intend to maintain their registrations for as long as it makes
sense to do so.
Cheers,
Linux Australia Council

Such a name change does seem appropriate -- from the point of view of
someone organising a Python conference, it's quite annoying to have to
explain why "Linux Australia" would be running the conference.
Something like "Open Source Australia" would be a better fit.
My only concern is the closeness of the name to OSIA (Open Source
Industry Australia), and this could be a potential source of
confusion.
tl;dr: Name change good, but ensure that that source of confusion isn't there.

SETR: I like "Open Source Australia", but I think just as linux.conf.au is
about more than "Linux" these days, Linux Australia can also be about more
than just Linux these days. If OSA is a better way to get other interest
groups (e.g. the former AUUG) to meet under a shared banner, then so be it.

I agree that OSA is not a viable option.

Linux Australia is doing a great job supporting and developing
communities engaged in open tools, technologies and events.
Hows "Open Communities Australia" sound?

I support the change in name with the caveat that we handle the branding
carefully and especially ensure we maintain the linux.conf.au brand as
independent.

I think that is closer to the mark... "Open Source" extends into a
vast arena well beyond Linux and BSD.
Still might be an issue however with the word "Free" being used in the
wrong context by most people.

To be encompassing of all aspects of the community which LA currently
represents, I suggest: Open Technologies Association of Australia, or
something along those lines (Australian Open Technologies Association,
etc). This avoids the contentions between the Free (libre) software
movement and the Open Source software movement, avoids the pitfalls
with something with 'Free' in its name, and caters for more than just
software developers, by including open hardware, 3D printing, etc.
