For the first time ever, LCA2021 is going to have an electronic conference badge! Over the next couple of months the badge and a variety of add-ons will be designed and produced, ready for hacking and fun interaction during and after the conference. The badge will feature an ESP32 processor, two OLED screens, and headers using the ?SAO? (Shitty Add-On) header format so that it can be customised and expanded in whatever way you like. To follow along the development process and get involved in making your own add-ons or software customisations, see the wiki page at http://www.openhardwareconf.org/wiki/Swagbadge2021 We have many fun plans for the badge, allowing conference attendees to interact with each other through the badge and to learn about distributed IoT systems along the way. To get the latest news make sure you follow the Twitter account for the project: https://twitter.com/swagbadge2021 So head on over to the wiki, follow the project on Twitter, and join the fun! EXCITING!!!!! The linux.conf.au 2021 Call for Sessions and Call for Miniconfs are now open. They will stay open until 6th November 2020 Anywhere on Earth (AoE) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anywhere_on_Earth). This is only 3 weeks away - so don't delay, get your talks in early! Our theme is "So what's next?". We all know we're living through unprecedented change and uncertain times. How can open source play a role in creating, helping and adapting to this ongoing change? What new developments in software and coding can we look forward to in 2021 and beyond? If you have ideas or developments you'd like to share with the open source community at linux.conf.au, we'd love to hear from you. Call for Sessions The main conference runs on Sunday 24 and Monday 25 January, with multiple streams catering for a wide range of interest areas. We invite you to submit a session (https://linux.conf.au/programme/sessions/) proposal for a talk. Talks are generally 35-45 minute presentations on a single topic presented in lecture format. Call for Miniconfs Miniconfs are dedicated day-long streams focusing on single topics, creating a more immersive experience for delegates than a session. We encourage you to get creative with how you could deliver your Miniconf virtually! Running a Miniconf (https://linux.conf.au/programme/miniconfs/) is a great way to gain experience, provide exposure for your project or topic, and raise your professional profile. They're a crowd favourite and an awesome way to kick off the conference. Miniconfs will run on Saturday 23 January, before the main conference commences on Sunday. No need to book flights or hotels Don't forget: the conference will be a fully online, virtual experience. This means our speakers will be beaming in from their own homes or workplaces. The organising team will be able to help speakers with their tech set-up. Each accepted presenter will have a tech check prior to the event to smooth out any difficulties and there will be an option to pre-record presentations. Have we piqued your interest? You can find out how to submit your session or miniconf proposals at https://linux.conf.au/programme/proposals/. If you have any other questions you can contact us via email at contact at lca2021.linux.org.au. Timeline 16th October: Call for sessions opens 6th November: Call for sessions closes January 23 2021: Miniconfs! January 24-25 2021: Main conference presentations Tickets will go on sale in the coming weeks. We'll keep you posted. We're looking forward to reading your submissions. linux.conf.au 2021 Organising Team About linux.conf.au 2021 Running since 1999, linux.conf.au is the largest linux and open source conference in the Asia-Pacific region. This is for programmers and sysadmins who want to work on implementing FOSS social media technologies for the use of LUV members. There are many reasons for wanting to avoid the commercial social media sites, but to do so we need viable alternatives. The aim of this group is to implement some of the alternatives and see if we can get them to a stage where they are useful. We will document what we do and make public instances of things that we determine to be worth using. At a later date we will have a meeting to present the results of our work to LUV members. This meeting is for programmers and sysadmins, everyone will get SSH access to a KVM virtual machine and can setup test instances of software. While this meeting is LUV focussed there's no reason why people from outside Victoria can't join in. Whatever technologies we decide to run as an ongoing service will be available for the free use of anyone in the FOSS community in Australia. The time specified on the event page is 4 hours, that's just a made up number. No-one is going to get kicked off, if you want to keep working for more than 4 hours that's fine. VMs that don't end up doing useful things will be shut down at the end, VMs that have useful services will keep running for further testing. Contact me off-list if you want your VM running before Saturday. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/ From russell at coker.com.au Sat Oct 31 16:17:44 2020 From: russell at coker.com.au (Russell Coker) Date: Sat, 31 Oct 2020 16:17:44 +1100 Subject: [Linux-aus] Matrix Message-ID: <3403209.eM9WTNgibX@liv> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_(protocol) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Element_(software) https://wiki.debian.org/Matrix I've setup a test installation of Matrix for LUV and the Linux community in Australia.
