From secretary at linux.org.au Tue Feb 4 14:46:45 2020 From: secretary at linux.org.au (Julien Goodwin) Date: Tue, 4 Feb 2020 14:46:45 +1100 Subject: [Linux-aus] 2020 Rusty Wrench awarded to Jonathan Oxer Message-ID: <16fb9efa-ceb9-3c69-2081-e2c3d70ed090@linux.org.au> The Rusty Wrench award for 2020 was presented to Jonathan Oxer. Jonathan Oxer has made significant contributions to open source both in Australia and Internationally. It is difficult to list all of his accomplishments - let alone his impact - not only to the commons of Free Software, but also to society through his work on assistive technologies. Jon has been a Debian developer, miniconf organiser, Linux Australia President, cryptography advocate, and even labeled "Australia's geekiest geek" - to list but a few. Lately he has been focusing on Open Hardware with contributions to Arduino, IoT, assistive devices, and more. Past recipient and representative of the council, Joshua Hesketh, presented the award during the closing ceremony of linux.conf.au 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utpF_wmGE3Y&t=9m10s For an excellent example of Jon?s recent work, view his linux.conf.au presentation this year about building accessible custom input devices: https://linux.conf.au/schedule/presentation/47/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkORky-RIQA The Rusty Wrench Award is Australia's highest honour for community contributions to the Open Source movement in the country. It was eponymously named after luminary Rusty Russell, one of Australia's most prominent contributors and community members, founder of linux.conf.au (as CALU, in 1999), and the inaugural recipient of the award. Thanks to everyone who nominated someone for the award: 11 highly worthy nominees were received. Thank you also to the 2019 council and previous Rusty Wrench awardees for reviewing the nominations and making the selection. Kind regards, Julien Goodwin Secretary, Linux Australia
