Person Responsible for Request: Donna Benjamin Request: That Linux Australia, as fiscal sponsor of the Australian Drupal Community, make a contribution to the Drupal 8 Accelerate fund. Hi Everyone! The Drupal Association will shortly be launching a crowdfunding campaign to raise US$250,000 for the Drupal 8 Accelerate program. This is a grants program created to support the community to get Drupal8 done. We are in beta now with about 50 critical issues blocking a release candidate. The remaining issues are difficult ones with many moving parts, and deep knowledge from a small number of people is needed to nail them. The funding program will support developers to come together in person for dedicated sprints, or free them to commit time they'd otherwise need to spend working to pay the rent. Way more information on the program is available at https://assoc.drupal.org/d8accelerate for those interested. As a board member of the Drupal Association, I have pledged to personally raise money for the fund. The Drupal Association itself is matching donations of up to US$62,500 and members of the board need to secure another US$62,500. Plus, we're hoping to raise another US$125,000 from the broader community. Many of my colleagues on the board run large Drupal companies. Those companies have all pledged anchor funding for the matching amount. I'm not in a position to do that, so I had initially planned to run a chookraffle to raise my share of it (around AUS$7,500) - but then the board decided to run it's own crowdfunding effort, so I shut down my chookraffle on pozible to wait for our crowdraise platform to be set up. I would like to ask the community, and council to consider making a contribution to the Drupal 8 Accelerate program in my name, on behalf of the Australian open source community. If you've got any questions, concerns, suggestions etc - please don't hesitate to ask. cheers Donna From kathy at kathyreid.id.au Thu Mar 19 14:13:41 2015 From: kathy at kathyreid.id.au (Kathy Reid) Date: Thu, 19 Mar 2015 14:13:41 +1100 Subject: [Linux-aus] Grant Request: Contribute to the Drupal 8 Accelerate fund Message-ID: <550A3EE5.8030604@kathyreid.id.au> Thanks Donna for raising this - some thinking points the community may wish to comment on below; * Drupal events such as campus and code sprints are traditionally umbrella'd by the Drupal Foundation, however Linux Australia has auspiced these events in Australia for a number of very positive reasons, such as bypassing currency and international banking issues, and also being able to leverage some of the processes LA has in place to support events - such as seed funds. In return, Drupal events such as Drupal Down Under and Drupal South have returned profits to LA, instead of say, the Drupal Foundation. It therefore makes sense to me that LA would make a financial contribution to Drupal. * One thing that struck me was the size of the funding that is being sought overall - it's a significant amount. Australia by comparison has a much smaller economy and fewer Drupal companies and practitioners by comparison to say the US, so I think it would be reasonable for the Drupal Association to expect a smaller contribution to be made by the Australian region. * Reading through the process for gaining access to Drupal 8 sprint and code camp grants, this seems well thought out and legitimate - so people are not going to get money without some realistic expectation of progress towards Drupal 8. I wonder if it would be appropriate for LA to make a financial contribution, but with an expectation that priority for those funds be given by Drupal Association to camp and sprint requests originating from Australia? This would make it a win-win - LA contributes and supports Drupal, but also aligns with our organisational values by supporting the Australian based Drupal community. When I first read this I was initially put off by the "consider making a contribution ... in my name" section - I thought that surely this should be done in the name of LA rather than an individual. But reading the excellent summary of the background prepared by Kathy, I now understand that each of the board members has been asked to personally oversee the collection of an amount of funding, and you're asking that LA donates this money in such a way that it counts as part of the funding you oversaw rather than going into the general "Broader community" funding pool. As you point out, many of your colleagues run large Drupal companies, which makes (or should, at least) collecting funding in their name much easier. You have chosen not to do this; instead, my understanding is that you've put lots of effort into growing the broader Drupal community in Australia. My understanding is that a large part of the reason that the Drupal events in Australia are run by, and return funding to, LA rather than the Drupal foundation is largely due to your work. On this basis, it seems perfectly reasonable to me that (A) LA supports the Drupal foundation with this funding request, and (B) that LA does so in a way that makes it clear that LA is able to do this because of your efforts. So in short, I wholeheartedly support this request. It seems to be in keeping with LA's goals, and it seems an excellent way to return funding raised from the Drupal community back to the Drupal community. Message-ID: Closes Friday 8th May PyCon Australia 2015 is pleased to announce that its Call for Proposals is now open! The conference this year will be held on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd August 2015 in Brisbane. We'll also be featuring a day of Miniconfs on Friday 31st July. The deadline for proposal submission is *Friday 8th May, 2015*. PyCon Australia attracts professional developers from all walks of life, including industry, government, and science, as well as enthusiast and student developers. We?re looking for proposals for presentations and tutorials on any aspect of Python programming, at all skill levels from novice to advanced. Presentation subjects may range from reports on open source, academic or commercial projects; or even tutorials and case studies. If a presentation is interesting and useful to the Python community, it will be considered for inclusion in the program. We're especially interested in short presentations that will teach conference-goers something new and useful. Can you show attendees how to use a module? Explore a Python language feature? Package an application? Miniconfs Four Miniconfs will be held on Friday 31st July, as a prelude to the main conference. Miniconfs are run by community members and are separate to the main conference. If you are a first time speaker, or your talk is targeted to a particular field, the Miniconfs might be a better fit than the main part of the conference. If your proposal is not selected for the main part of the conference, it may be selected for one of our Miniconfs: *DjangoCon AU* is the annual conference of Django users in the Southern Hemisphere. It covers all aspects of web software development, from design to deployment - and, of course, the use of the Django framework itself. It provides an excellent opportunity to discuss the state of the art of web software development with other developers and designers. The *Python in Education Miniconf* aims to bring together community workshop organisers, professional Python instructors and professional educators across primary, secondary and tertiary levels to share their experiences and requirements, and identify areas of potential collaboration with each other and also with the broader Python community. The *Science and Data Miniconf* is a forum for people using Python to tackle problems in science and data analysis. It aims to cover commercial and research interests in applications of science, engineering, mathematics, finance, and data analysis using Python, including AI and 'big data' topics. The *OpenStack Miniconf* is dedicated to talks related to the OpenStack project and we welcome proposals of all kinds: technical, community, infrastructure or code talks/discussions; academic or commercial applications; or even tutorials and case studies. If a presentation is interesting and useful to the OpenStack community, it will be considered for inclusion. We also welcome talks that have been given previously in different events. First Time Speakers We welcome first-time speakers; we are a community conference and we are eager to hear about your experience. If you have friends or colleagues who have something valuable to contribute, twist their arms to tell us about it! Please also forward this Call for Proposals to anyone that you feel may be interested. The most recent call for proposals information can always be found at: http://pycon-au.org/cfp See you in Brisbane in July! Important Dates 1. Call for Proposals opens : Friday 27th March, 2015 2.
