You might be surprised.

Reading metadata, head seeks, rotation etc slows things down.
Often, file transfers are limited to single disk spindle read rates
i.e. ~ 100 MB/s or ~ 1 Gbit/s

_If_ you can keep a 1 Gbit/s Ethernet link full, it can transfer 10 TB per
day.

15 TB in < 2 days isn't too long to wait for the initial backup.
