Hi everyone,
Linux Australia is a community and volunteer-run organisation. In order
to better understand and meet the needs and aspirations of our
3000-strong member community, the Council wishes to design and
administer a member survey. The resulting analysis and recommended
actions would input into the organisation's strategic agenda for the
next few years, strengthening our organisation and our membership base.
We'd very much welcome your input into the survey design and approach,
and our initial thoughts on the survey approach are listed below for
your feedback. Feedback may be sent publicly to this list, or privately
to Council (please indicate if you would like your feedback to remain
anonymous and we will not disclose your identity).
Is our approach right? Do the four phases of the survey make sense?
Are we asking the right questions or covering the right areas in the
design phase?
Should we offer incentives for completion of the survey?
How often should we repeat the survey?
Is this an engagement that could be done within the community or do you
think we need to engage with a commercial provider to do this?
Thanking you in advance for your feedback, thoughts and reflections,
With kind regards,
Kathy

Design
The survey should be designed according to qualitative and quantitative
best practice methods, enabling statistically valid data to be captured
on areas such as;
*
Demographics of the community
*
Confidence of the community in Linux Australia's leadership, vision
and effectiveness
*
Awareness within the community of services and facilities provided
by Linux Australia
*
Awareness within the community of Linux Australia's priorities and
activities, and identification of whether these need to change
*
Identification of unmet community needs
Administration
The survey should be administered if possible using an open
source-licensed toolset. It may be hosted in the cloud or on Linux
Australia's infrastructure. If hosted in the cloud, Linux Australia
should be able to retain access to all data captured for future use.
The survey tool, and survey questions, should be able to be re-used in
future years to assist in the identification of key trends over time.
The survey tool should allow only one submission per respondent, and
restrict respondents to current Linux Australia members. Linux Australia
will provide a full membership listing for this purpose.
Analysis
The engagement also seeks an objective and insightful analysis of the
survey results. The party undertaking the survey will need to have a
thorough understanding of Linux Australia's history, the wider political
and organisational environment in which it operates and the broader open
source community in order to effectively deliver here.
The analysis should graphically represent recommendations or conclusions
where possible to enhance the readability of the report.
Recommended corrective and initiative action
Corrective or initiative actions should be recommended in the analysis
report to address weaknesses, gap areas or areas of opportunity.
Recommendations should be prioritised for action based on findings in
the survey data.
