Software Freedom Day 2010
*Software Freedom Day 2010*
*Limestone Coast Report
*
Software Freedom Day 2010 for Team Limestone Coast, Mount Gambier, SA,
Australia was a huge event this year, it turned out to be by far the
biggest & most successful event that we have held for Software Freedom
Day in our 4 year history of holding these events.
Leading up to the day, some of our members were able to discuss Free
software and the event on our local Radio station, which added to the
existing interest within the community.
On the day, we had a group of 8 volunteers to help out, including local
teachers and IT professionals. The event was held in the IT area of the
new state of the art Community Library. We were open from 10:00am until
3:30pm, and we had people lining up to get into the venue when we arrived!
Our focus this year was on the following:-
* Open Source Gaming
* Office and Productivity Applications
* Home Networking
* MythTV and XBMC based media centers..
People were able to wander around the various stations on the day, and
discover some of the Free software on offer. As in previous years,
OpenOffice and the Gimp were favourites, along with the GPL'd games such
as Neverball. Our volunteers were on hand to answer questions on a range
of topics, explaining the purpose of the event and handing out schwag to
the younger visitors. Due to the overwhelming interest from the
community, at some points over the day there were line-ups to get into
the event of over 30metres.
Hundreds of CDs and DVDs containing TheOpenDisc and Ubuntu were given
out, along with information on how to safely access more great Free
software on the Internet.
The day was enormously successful, we had well over 500 (the Library
estimated 1000, based on door count) people come in over the course of
the day, and we were all very pleased with the turnout from the
community in support of our event this year.
We also had a heap of schwag provided to us by Linux Australia to give
away on the day, a huge thank you goes out to Linux Australia, we put it
all to good use & made up show bags to give away to the crowds of people
that attended this year.
In consequence of the successful day, the local radio station (5SE-963
AM) has expressed interest in broadcasting a regular show around Free
software & we have also put together a FOSS CD/DVD package & book that
is available for loan from our new Library, we are also doing the same
for all of our Primary & Secondary Schools around our region (47
Schools), these packages will be updated each year inline with Software
Freedom Day, giving residents & students of our region access to the
latest of FOSS software.
