Does anyone have any solid data on what real support schools have
asked for in the past? Do they ask at all?

Anecdotally, I'll add the tale of me asking people who claim that they
use a particular proprietary solution because they're paying for
technical support. When I ask about the competence of the support, I'm
mostly told, "Don't know, we've never needed it."
