[Linux-aus] Young Aussies say pirated software is OK

Hi Harry,
It depends where your "real world" is.
My experience is that Linux reigns where the task is computing and
that Windows reigns where the task is data processing.
So you'll find Linux massively used in fields where computers *do stuff*.
Like engineering, hard sciences, automation, embedded devices,
ISPs and other providers of network services. For example, Apple
recently ran an ad aimed at scientists promoting MacOS because it
was Linux-compatible under the cover.
You'll find Windows massively used where accounting books are kept.
So if your real world is using computers to keep the books (such as
a lot of small business) then Windows rules.
But if your real world is engineering projects, such as the air
warfare destroyer, then Linux rules.
TAFE is expected to train people for both of these worlds. It
says something about the balance between the service sector
and the high-value-add manufacturing sector in Australia that
TAFE don't see any demand or any role for itself in teaching
Linux and other FOSS.
As a personal example, I am a senior network engineer at an ISP.
TAFE are sending us people who understand Cisco routers, but
without an understanding of Linux --- the platform of choice
for network services --- and those people need a huge amount of
training to bring up to speed.
Cheers, Glen
