> Hi Tracy Anne

I think you can understand why people would be interested in the backgrounds of
people who are soliciting large swathes of cash from a community.

Actually I'm only asking for the equivalent of a Gold coin donation from 1% of the Linux community.

>I have had a look for your postings to community sites but have only found a
Tracy Anne Barlow contributing as a gold member of the .Net community as a VB coder

That's me. I wasn't aware that I was a Gold member, and I haven't been anywhere near that board for years.

I code in C# these days, unfortunately it's on a Microsoft platform. It's that or be unemployed. It seems that none of my skills are good enough for Linux and FOSS companies.

and using spamgourmet on mono development lists.

Yes me again. I contributed some bug reports during the early Alpha stages of the Mono project, when I was unemployed, and had the time.

>I have to agree with others that the overall impression does not build my
confidence as spamgourmet is used as an anonymiser

I use it for anti spam, I always include my name as part of the address.

>and the references I can find
of Helios include other situations where someone by that name has asked the
Linux community for funds because they were sick, and because a friend was out
of work, both requests going to the same paypal account.

Helios is a fairly well known Blogger, at least in the US, he's closely associated with Don Parris who is one of the editors of lxer. His asking for money from the community is a matter of record, I believe.

>$350k US is a truckload of money.

It sure is, but not unobtainable. about $AU2.00 from 1% of the Linux community would see it raised. What concerns me is that so many bitch about someone who gets off his arse and tries to do something for Linux, but narey a word is said about the freeloaders who NEVER contribute a damn thing to Linux.

>And it seems we are not the first people to be sceptical.

I happen to know some things that PP should be concerned about.

Yep PP gets his 15 minutes on lxer.

>Personally the structure of the approach whereby the idea is posited
by someone anonymous who apparently has convinced a car team of support
of a community which they have not secured is *not* the kind of relationship I
would want to enter in under any circumstances because that would
in effect be supporting an approach which feels more like pain centred marketing
than anything that a group of volunteers would wish on each other.

But you see, I'm not annonymous. I post on lxer, ask Don Parris about me, check out various ezboards where I post on Linux,

>I went to an event this week where some of the participants were discussing new
'destructive marketing' strategies which has given me pause for thought. Whether
the intent is above board or not the approach is disconcerting to say the least.

I can't for the life of me see what's destructive about getting the Linux name well known.

Tracyanne
