You make it sound as if I hadn't noticed, and that I hadn't been
involved.  As was said earlier, I've been advocating a merger of AUUG
and Linux Australia for years.  "The penguins" arrived on the AUUG
board because I encouraged them to do so.

Yes, I've been reading the arguments for and against in this thread,
but I don't have time to summarize.  Basically, though, I'd say that
it's better to unite than to divide.  Do you object to KDE people in
Linux Australia?  Hopefully not.  So why should Linux people object to
UNIX people in the same organization?  For the average user, the
desktop is more indicative of what they think of the system than the
choice of Linux vs (say) FreeBSD.  Years ago at a Linux conference Dan
Shearer demonstrated my FreeBSD box running KDE (I think) and said
that it was Linux.  For the spectators, there was no way for him to
know it wasn't.

As I've said, the only serious issue in merging is the proprietary
users.  Whether the LA membership wants to exclude them depends
ultimately on whether the organization is political or technical.
