Canon printers can be like this too :(
No documentation, no open source drivers..

Epson seem to do a better job in this regard (although I don't know about 
their scanners).

We have a HP ScanJet 5200C which works pretty well in FreeBSD, but it doesn't 
do film/slide scanning.
