If you are thinking of activities that are to be national, for example,
installfests and roadshows. A good marketing strategy is to use existing
promotional avenues. Also, they are often free, as in beer :)
National events that may be appropriate for LA are Adult Learners Week
(http://www.adultlearnersweek.org/) and National Science Week
(http://www.scienceweek.info.au/). Both are heavily promoted using
various media including radio, www, and direct marketing to target
groups with printed material (brochures and posters). I'm not sure about
TV as I don't have one.
There are federal grants for National Science Week, but they closed at
the end of January :( Some States offer grants. Here is the link for
Victoria: http://www.innovation.vic.gov.au/programs/program.asp?id=220
You may not need a grant to put up an activity, particularly if you were
going to do one anyway. But it's nice to know they are there.
National Science Week this year is 14 – 22 August 2004. But there is a
lot of promotion leading up to the event. So getting in early, leverages
the opportunity. Note: Schools get heavily involved in National Science
Week.
There are usually competitions during National Science Week. I know one
year I entered a competition on Triple J. First prize was a day on radio
with the Sleek Geeks (Dr Karl and Adam Spencer). I didn't win, but
second prize was goodo - three Dr Karl books :)
All the best
