IBM launches project to boost open source use
By Online Staff
April 30 2003
IBM Australia has announced a three-year project to focus on increasing
the performance of open source software like Linux to facilitate the
movement of such software into enterprise computing.
The project will be the first under a new initiative - the Centre for
Advanced Studies (CAS) - which was announced by the company in Sydney
today.
The CAS aims to consolidate the amount - over $40 million - which IBM
invests in national research each year.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Federal
Government's ICT Centre of Excellence.
The CAS, the first outside North America, will give Australian
researchers access to the company's worldwide research resources.
IBM's 15 existing research relationships/projects in Australia will now
come under the centre's programme.
The project will be undertaken by National ICT Australia (NICTA) at its
University of New South Wales site. The initial phase will involve
seconded staff, as well as PhD and honours students from the
University.
IBM Australia CEO Philip Bullock said: "Open source is key to the
future of business as it enables greater levels of connectivity and
integration within an organisation and with its business partners,
customers and suppliers."
