The Systems Engineer contributes to the analysis, design, development,
implementation and support of IT infrastructure projects to enhance and
extend the Scientific Computing and IT capabilities of the Australian
Synchrotron to ensure that the computing requirements are addressed in the
most effective and efficient way across the entire organisation.
Major Accountabilities
Consolidate, standardize and improve core IT infrastructure vital for the
operation of the Australian Synchrotron including accelerator and beamline
computing infrastructure (IOCs, OPIs, network, storage, to increase
manageability, efficiency and resilience of core IT infrastructure and
simultaneously reduce risks and cost of IT operation.
Contribute to the planning, design and implementation of major projects,
which enhance and extend the IT infrastructure across the facility, to grow
the Scientific Computing & IT capabilities.
Contribute to projects, which automate workflows including scientific data
handling & processing for the science and corporate departments, to ensure
that the user throughput can be increased.
Assist with the development of scientific and corporate software
applications, ensuring that new or changing business processes can be
efficiently and effectively supported.
Assist with 2nd Level IT support, providing users and help-desk with support
related to relevant IT issues and to provide support related mainly to issues
with Network or storage.
Advise on IT security and monitor and improve the configuration of devices
responsible for network security (firewalls, VPN, etc), making sure critical
data and information are only disclosed to those who have a right to know it,
that data and information are protected against unauthorised modification and
that IT systems are available and useable when required.
Foster the adoption of standards and good practices in the Scientific
Computing & IT team. Contribute to IT policies, procedures and documentation,
ensuring that the IT maintainability and sustainability is constantly
improved.
Train IT and non-IT staff across the organisation. Advise on the effective
use of hardware, software, and network infrastructure, so that all staff and
team members can utilize the available IT infrastructure efficiently and
effectively.
Required Skills
Tertiary qualification in Information Technology or similar subject (Software
Engineering etc).
More than 3 years of experience as Systems and/or Networks Engineer.
Solid knowledge of, and experience with, TCP/IP networking (switches,
routers, firewalls). Excellent knowledge of network security.
Solid knowledge of network, server and storage hardware; good knowledge of
virtualisation technologies.
Competent with administering different operating systems, Linux in
particular.
Basic programming skills (Python, Perl, Ruby, C/C++/C#, Windows PowerShell,
Linux scripting).
Proven fault finding skills in large IT environments and competent in solving
hardware and software issues.
Well developed, effective oral and written communication skills, together
with proven abilities in liaising effectively with people at all levels.
Ability to balance competing priorities effectively.
Ability to produce quality work within tight time constraints.
Ability to work both as a part of a team and autonomously and an aptitude for
self learning.
Desirable Skills
Bachelor degree.
Knowledge of web server (Apache, Tomcat) and database technologies (Oracle,
Postgres, MySQL).
Interest in emerging technologies.
