Senior Systems Admin - UNIX/LI, Full Time

I have a client seeking a Snr Sys Admin candidate.

The client has developed and is operating a real-time market surveillance service for stockbroking firms (primarily used by internal compliance officers) that automatically identifies suspicious trading patterns.

The product was introduced into the ASX a few years ago and commands a majority share in terms of trading volume and has been rolled out for equity markets in London, Toronto, Singapore, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

This said, the client is still a small company with some of the favourable small company approach with 22 staff in Sydney CBD and representatives in Toronto and London. Revenue growth has been rapid following the initial single round of funding. The client have solid relationships with private, public and academic institutions.

The client is looking to grow its business with the current product base as well as developing products for other market functions (currently a product for surveillance of derivatives trading is underway).

The functions of the Sys Administrator are as one would expect including:

- Design, deployment and maintenance of mission critical network and systems infrastructure used to support the provision of the ASP service.

- Day to day operations of in-house developed software used to deliver the ASP service.

- Identification of opportunities for improving the maintainability of the service, and liaising with the software development team to get them implemented.

- Design, deployment and maintenance of network and systems infrastructure used to support the software development team.

The skill base required includes:

- Strong interpersonal and communications skills; capable of acting as a vendor liaison and working closely with upper management.

- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills. In particular, you should be comfortable dealing with previously unknown issues.

- Ability to work independently, as well as with other members of an existing operations team.

- Ability to prioritise jobs according to the nature of the task.

- Ability to design solutions with the bigger picture in mind, and not just the immediate job at hand.

- Ability to write scripts in an administrative language (Perl and shell). Experience with Java and C++ would be a bonus.

- Strong understanding of UNIX/Linux systems.

The most desirable background in the ideal candidate includes:

- At least five years administering large scale UNIX/LINUX systems.

- Sound experience in operational IT solutions, preferably in environments that are highly security sensitive.

- Good working knowledge of networking, particularly Cisco equipment.

- Good working knowledge of enterprise backup and storage solutions. Previous experience in working with large volumes of data would be particularly well-regarded.

- Experience with as many of the following as possible: web servers, Java web application servers, LDAP directory services, server load balancing, clustering, distributed systems, systems monitoring tools, change control processes, remote administration tools, open source software in general, performance tuning CPU and I/O intensive software applications.

Remuneration is to be negotiated and would be dependant on experience, approach and suitability.
