Yesterday I got in touch with Sally and the team.

The tech is building out in Unity and it's a bit late in the day to change that - and the investment for that goes way over this grant.

The artifacts in this application are more shared material, so created to inspire others in how they can use this concept in their own regions and projects. So I'd like to push the definition/requirements around open culture - ie that the materials produced are licensed under GNU or copyleft.

One of the things I am finding working with more artists (finally, yay!) Is that they have a limit to their technical ability and create in what's easiest, but then supporting them to move to open source fits with their values of art and art being inclusive and accessible.

Ideally, I'll support other workshops created around having Sally in the region. I've got two artists helping on some AR art and we are moving that to open source.

This opportunity, although left field will create something special in a region that doesn't get these opportunities. I am committed to making this the first part of a bigger puzzle, and openness and knowledge sharing is the only way (in my opinion) that tech projects can be community driven and accessible to small communities.

I completely understand if we can't make it fit this grant criteria.

Thanks,

Lyndsey

-------- Original message --------

From: Kathy Reid <kathy@kathyreid.id.au>

Date: 1/4/22 7:52 am (GMT+09:30)

To: jackson.lyndsey@gmail.com, council@linux.org.au, grants@lists.linux.org.au

Subject: Re: [Grants] Grant Application from Lyndsey Jackson for Big Sand Band - Regional SA

Dear Grants List,

I am writing this in my capacity as an LA member providing feedback on a
grant request.

This grant proposal is well thought through and well costed. It is
linked to LA's core values of building open technology and open culture,
with the added benefit of reaching regional participants and
communities. The costs here all seem appropriate, and inclusive of costs
that make the project workable - such as a per diem.

Yes, this is a little out of the box, but I am also pleased to see
something like this come through as a Grant request - the Grants program
enables this sort of risk-taking.

I would appreciate more information on the artefacts that Sally Coleman
will be producing.

I also note that Unity is not free and open source software - it is free
to use, but not is not open source [0]. Is there a possibility of the
artefacts being produced in something that is free and open source like
Blender?

Kind regards, Kathy

[0] https://store.unity.com/compare-plans

On 30/03/2022 11:11 am, Linux Australia Website wrote:
> Your Email Address: jackson.lyndsey@gmail.com
> Project name: Big Sand Band - Regional SA
> Aim of the project: Hi - I would love it if you could start by taking a look at this link https://www.canva.com/design/DAE8LMdaKYg/_BZAserMgUBU1QLju4LOBQ/view?utm_content=DAE8LMdaKYg&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link&utm_source=publishsharelink#1
> I am working in Regional SA and my aim is to get new digital projects out into the regions to increase exposure and experience around the tech industry and skills. As a volunteer (and also able to put some paid work time) I am helping with a new festival in my region called FLAME (fire, lights, music, arts, entertainment) that will be held every two years. I've been able to use my networks to bring some new digital artists to the area, and to organise a panel to speak. Getting tech onto the agenda has been really welcome, and I'm going to be able to attract a lot of really great people and conversations on how we get more done in small towns.
> This project is using open source technology, and being open about the research and learnings. We want regional communities to be inspired by art, to create new ways that performers can create reach, and encourage regional leaders to think differently and collaboratively about technology in people's lives.
> The FLAME Festival will be held on May 27-29 - the Big Sand Band video launch and the community panel will be held on May 28.
> Estimated cost breakdown of the project: This application is to enhance Sally Coleman's participation in the festival and to pay her time to create community artifacts that others can share. We can have Sally appear remotely - but to be able to bring her to the town will really create a special experience - especially for young people.
> Flights $400
> Accommodation $450
> Car hire $380
> Per diems $210
> Videographer hire $500
> Video editing $500
> Total $2,440
> Project team details: Lyndsey Jackson is the lead volunteer and agitator trying to bring something cool to her small town, and to build ideas that can be shared by others. Lyndsey has been working with open source technologies for over 15 years, and involved in many communities such as drupal, govhack, open ag. Lyndsey has previously been the Chair of EFA and is committed to digital rights. I've also spoken at linux conf twice :)
> Sally Coleman is an artist and music producer. Her vision for bringing art and technology and touring to regional Australia is incredibly exciting. Sally is trying to create something special in an open and collaborative way.
> Sally is working with a team from Flinders University that are providing her with the tech to make this happen - they are backing her idea and helping to showcase in Adelaide.
> The FLAME Festival is being run by the Copper Coast Council and a large group of volunteers. The event organisers have a small budget and are looking to create an event that will be held ongoing every two years. For ease it will be proposed that funds will be auspiced through Council and then Linux Australia will benefit from their promotion and social media also.
> First Name: Lyndsey
> Last Name: Jackson
> Email Address: jackson.lyndsey@gmail.com
> A statement including a willingness to provide regular project updates on the project: I am very willing. You will hear all about this! It's going to be very cool. And, I recognise it is out of the box. In addition to getting much needed funds to bring this element to the community, I really want to demonstrate to regional towns that there is a large tech community or organisations and people that are willing and able to help with their aspirations.
>
> _______________________________________________
> Grants mailing list
> Grants@lists.linux.org.au
> http://lists.linux.org.au/mailman/listinfo/grants
