From president at linux.org.au Wed Jun 5 19:36:36 2024 From: president at linux.org.au (Linux Australia President) Date: Wed, 05 Jun 2024 19:36:36 +1000 Subject: [Grants] Proposed changes to Linux Australia Grants Policy Message-ID: Dear community, Each year Linux Australia offers a Grants Program, with funding available for community members and groups to assist with the development and promotion of open technologies within Australasia. As flagged at our AGM at the beginning of the year, we are looking to improve how we track the success of grants that we give out, especially around the purchase of hardware for use with improving compatibility for open source software. This is an area that we currently find difficult to assess, and something that we wish to improve to ensure we continue to offer grants equitably across our community. The Linux Australia Council has come up with some proposed changes to our Grants Guidelines. Our existing guidelines can now be found on GitHub at https://github.com/linuxaustralia/constitution_and_policies/blob/master/guidelines_for_grant_submissions.md The proposed changes are available for review and feedback at https://github.com/linuxaustralia/constitution_and_policies/pull/46. We encourage people to review this and provide feedback via the pull request over the coming week. Our aim is to complete adjustments to the Grant Guidelines by Friday 14 June, and then open our 2024 Grants Program on Monday 17 June 2024. We will continue to review this over time and adjust as necessary to improve the program for the community. The majority of this community works in open source. The idea of this accessibility fellowship is to encourage a blind or low vision member of our community or adjacent community to join RSEAA24 so that they can hold us accountable of how accessible the experience of the event really was. This would be provided as an open access blog that could be put into figshare or Zenodo and would be provided as part of the event summary report. It is hope that this type of fellowship could be replicated at other events to ensure that accessibility is considered with the most marginalised people in mind. Estimated cost breakdown of the project: The idea would be for the fellow to get a free ticket to the event (that RSEAA24 would cover) as well as $250 AUD beforehand and $250 AUD when the final report is submitted. We would love for Linux Australia to cover the $500 AUD for the fellowship. Project team details: Rowland Mosbergen is the co-chair and he would be the main person organising the fellowship.Rowland has experience in designing events and programs that are underpinned by Diversity, Equity and Inclusion principles as his work as Practical Diversity and Inclusion shows (https://www.practicaldiversity.org/). He has also experience in centring and working with people from marginalised backgrounds. We would provide an EOI form and then identify someone who best represents the RSE community and has a screen reader that they can use during the event. First Name: Rowland Last Name: Mosbergen Email Address: rowland.mosbergen at gmail.com A statement including a willingness to provide regular project updates on the project: We would be keen to hear about how we are progressing even before the event. We would hope the fellow would be able to post via their own Mastadon or through the RSEAA24 Mastadon account. We could provide these links to Linux Australia on a regular basis to show how the accessibility of the event is progressing. We would expect the report to be finished by the end of September or the first week of October. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Rowland, who I know personally, does excellent work in the research software engineering space, and in particular has created a community of practice for research software engineers both in Melbourne and broader, evidenced by: https://rse-aunz.org/ Research software engineering as a practice, and a profession, is gaining broader recognition both in Australia an abroad. Research software is predominantly based on open source software, and where it is not, there is often a desire to escape proprietary vendor lock-in. As research in general becomes increasingly dependent upon software engineering and research software infrastructures, Linux Australia, in my view, should look to engage research software engineers as a key aligned community (as Sae Ra has done so successfully with the library technology community). +1 to this request.
