Q: - Some specifics around the cost breakdown would be helpful, for example what equipment would be purchased to work with the OBS platform? What is the expected lifespan of the equipment - I'm very aware that many devices have a usable life of only 2-3 years these days (sadly). Are there costings available for that equipment? A: The item being purchased is a PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) camera that would be used. RGB Link is approximately $2000 at present. --- Q: Would there be documentation written and made openly available so that the solution could be replicated by other groups, therefore meaning that the Grant, if funded, has higher impact? A: Absolutely, this is an important part is to help the community grow and support each other because that's the basis of "Open Source". And would be 100% something that can be committed too. --- Q: - Are there milestones or phases for this Grant (which is 20% of the Grants pool for this year) - for example, Step 1 might be "get OBS working with hardware" and Step 2 might be "document the solution" while Step 3 might be "have someone else validate the solution works with a different event"? A: Not specifically, it's a single item purchase. However, the follow on steps are a good point to have in place. -- And the other question was could it be replicated at the other events, ABSOLUTELY. I believe I've had discussion(s) with other LA members. The diversity angle here that I see is about greater audience engagement in activities, facilitated by open source solutions - but please let me know if I've mis-interpreted that. To this end, there are some questions which highlight how this request could be more strongly aligned to Linux Australia's goals. - Some specifics around the cost breakdown would be helpful, for example what equipment would be purchased to work with the OBS platform? I also want to acknowledge the efforts Jen and her team put into audio visual at Everything Open 2024 in Gladstone, which was all done on a volunteer basis. This speaks to Jen's knowledge around this space, and the potential for this Grant to contribute to a replicable, repeatable solution for streaming events using open source software. Currently, roller derby gets no grant support, and we have some of the highest participation of Gender Diverse and Neurodiverse skaters. The team behind SCA are an offshoot of Kingston City Rollers which recently won a gold level award for LGBTI participation. We want to support open source, and our team came up and supported "Everything Open 2024" for an in-kind (some expenses covered by the event) to live stream the event to the world along with recording it. > The key milestone is to provide streaming for multiple events across the year using these funds. Previously there was minimal support to sporting teams but its taking much more great significance as more continues. We know that money these days is tight for everyone, (interest rates, politics mutter mutter), but we want Linux Australia to know that their support of a sport with its scoreboard, stats and other items built on the back of open source technologies, are huge, and well loved. We would make sure during any streams that we can place a "Powered by Linux Australia" or "Supported by Linux Australia" as part of this. Along with any other ideas you might have, but we'd really love to work with you. > > _______________________________________________ > Grants mailing list > Grants at lists.linux.org.au > http://lists.linux.org.au/mailman/listinfo/grants -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Community feedback received during the consultation period was considered which provided contrasting views. Ultimately Council decided to award the grant and thus provide the sponsorship. Please email the Linux Australia treasurer (treasurer at linux.org.au) to arrange payment of the sponsorship funds and determine what documentation is required. Your application was discussed at a recent Linux Australia Council. After much discussion and with reference to feedback received through the Grants mailing list, unfortunately the decision was made to decline the application. One of the Linux Australia Council's tasks is to make sure that grants provide a clear benefit to the Open Technology community from where its membership draws and drive advocacy towards more Open methodologies and standards. This is especially challenging in 2024 due to the limited funds available for grants this year. When evaluating this grant application, a recurring observation was that the proposed hardware purchase had limited capacity in furthering open technologies that contribute to the system put together by Sports Connection Australia. Council was very supportive of the broader aims of the project: there is a clear need for a turn-key event streaming solution (including hardware) that is truly accessible to all organisations regardless of their situation. A grant application delivering clearer benefits to the Open Technology components and their users throughout the community is likely to be more favourably received. Council would welcome the opportunity to discuss this with you to help work towards a future grant application. Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you would like to discuss further.
