Nowadays you can't do much in the server space with only 8G of RAM and while optimising things for RAM efficiency would be a good thing to do, having it work on 16G first would be best. Also for educational purposes a cluster of 16/128 modules could provide 14*6G VMs or 21*4G VMs which could be really good for running a training course. Another reason for getting the bigger modules is that 32G of storage isn't a lot and the cluster doesn't appear to have any options for connecting M.2 or SATA storage so more storage on device is needed. 128G also allows for experimenting with cluster filesystems, 7*100G storage nodes connected via the built in GigE might be usable for a Ceph setup with 16G of RAM per node. I also recommend getting the version with the chassis as the chassis is cheap, looks like good quality, and the grant application is NOT for hardware work but for software work. So paying extra to avoid hardware hacking is appropriate. -- My Main Blog http://etbe.coker.com.au/ My Documents Blog http://doc.coker.com.au/ From jwoithe at just42.net Wed Dec 20 22:22:43 2023 From: jwoithe at just42.net (Jonathan Woithe) Date: Wed, 20 Dec 2023 21:52:43 +1030 Subject: [Grants] RISC-V, smart-watch, and tablet computing development - grant application decision Message-ID: Dear Russell The RISC-V, smart-watch, and tablet computing development grant application was discussed by the Linux Australia Council on 20 Dec 2023. Thank you for taking the time to formulate and submit it. Unfortunately the application was not approved. The application indicated that work associated with an earlier Linux Australia grant is still ongoing. To this end, Council expressed a desire to see more concrete results from the previous grant. If the intent is to build on that work, a clearer outline of the connections and mutual benefits between the two would be helpful. Council encourages you to refine the application with these points in mind and submit when the 2024 Linux Australia Grants Program opens. As always, the Linux Australia Council will be happy to provide feedback on draft submissions. Please feel free to contact myself or any member of the Linux Australia Council if you have questions. Unfortunately, your application was not successful. The grant application was detailed and we appreciated the difficulty in providing firm quotations in the circumstances. However, the need for the proposed work program was unclear to Council due to efforts already underway by others (see [1] for example). As a result, the benefits conveyed to the Free and Open Source community by the proposal were not obvious. Council encourages you to make contact when the next Grants Program opens in 2024 to discuss these aspects of your application prior to submission in order to maximise your chances of success. We are pleased to inform you that the grant application was approved subject to there being a clear application and promotion of open source values and resources. Congratulations! The grant is to cover the expenses of $2000 as outlined in the original grant application[1]. Please email the Linux Australia treasurer (treasurer at linux.org.au) to arrange the required payments. As outlined in the grant guidelines, Linux Australia request that you provide a brief report about the activities funded by this grant for inclusion in our Annual Report. We ask that this be sent via email to council at linux.org.au by the end of November 2024 to allow sufficient time for its incorporation into the 2024 Annual Report. If you have further questions feel free to contact myself or any member of the Linux Australia Council. I appreciate the Council considering the proposal and providing feedback. May I make two notes? 1/ I note Russell Coker?s application was rejected also, and I hope very much my own project had no bearing on his outcome. I would feel very bad if I ?over-saturated? the RISC-V software interest. 2/ I appreciate the feedback, though I must confess to feeling disappointed in the lack of discussion. I had assumed, erroneously, the grants process would be a dialog with questions/answers, to help refine/strengthen the proposal, and provide Council with answers to its questions. For instance, I have also seen the specific page to which you link but (a) it provides no evidence it is ongoing, and (b) it does not go far enough. It does not include very important free software ELT/ETL tools (that I referred to in my proposal) such as Apache Kafka, AirByte, and others. Without these tools, the whole field of data engineering disappears. Further, my proposal sought to interact with the open-source projects to further the RISC-V support while the paper to which you refer merely notes problems exist. This is not to criticise nor complain, merely to say questions that are not asked go unanswered; had these been put to me I would have been delighted to work with the Council to ensure a solid proposal that would allow us, together, to ensure a great result for free software in the world. I had believed the grants process was more collaborative, but knowing that is not the case, I do look forward to working with you again in 2024 to ensure a more robust submission in future. I?m still committed to furthering the area of database / data tools on RISC-V so I shall keep investigating options and will happily report back if I find some success. Once again, many thanks for your kind consideration of the project, and for the insightful feedback. I hope the Council enjoys a tremendous Christmas and New Year period with your friends and family, and I also wish Russell the best with his work, who has been a source of inspiration and information to me. If a particular topic is popular among members, there's a strong change that there will be multiple grant applications related to it (as we've seen this year with RISC-V topics). There certainly isn't a policy of limiting the number of grants awarded in any single area of interest. Rest assured that the outcome of your application was not influenced by Russell Coker's most recent application, or any other past or current grant applications. > 2/ I appreciate the feedback, though I must confess to feeling > disappointed in the lack of discussion. I had assumed, erroneously, the > grants process would be a dialog with questions/answers, to help > refine/strengthen the proposal, and provide Council with answers to its > questions. ... This is a fair comment. It is worth noting that it's not just Council who can ask questions on the grants list: any Linux Australia member can subscribe to the Grants list and make suggestions and ask questions. For better or worse, this time of year is very busy for Council as we work to finalise the year's activities, put the annual report together and prepare for the AGM in January - all alongside everything else that needs doing at our day jobs and privately. For various reasons, circumstances meant that for all the grants submitted in late November, detailed post-submission engagement by Council members was unfortunately not possible. We apologise for this. Council therefore needed to rely on the content of the application in isolation. This is perhaps not ideal and may be something for Council to consider next year when setting the cutoff date for grant applications. I can't speak for other current or future members of Council, but there may be merit in considering a slightly earlier closing date to avoid grant evaluation overlapping with the rest of the end-of-year tasks. > I hope the Council enjoys a tremendous Christmas and New Year period with > your friends and family ...
