- Wed 19 Oct: Creative Coding

(details below)

NB all times are NZDT/UTC+13

Greetings from AuckPUG/Auckland branch, and around the country,

We have plenty of Python for you this month, with an accent on the
practical. All meetings on BBB. (keen to hear if you know of any
Auckland locations we could use in-person!)

Coding Challenge-week 1: has just (officially) concluded. Have you
managed to produce a working solution? Did you learn some Python and/or
some programming tips along the way? You may still (use Meetup) email
'dn' with questions, solutions, ideas, ...

Tue 4 Oct, 1730 for 1800
(https://www.meetup.com/NZPUG-Christchurch/events/288130462/)

Zane will be talking about a bit of fun he had with a Geiger counter PCB
he obtained from Aliexpress!

Coding Evening: Wed 5 Oct, 1800 for 1830
(https://www.meetup.com/nzpug-auckland/events/hgxmwsydcnbhb/). Please
RSVP to be advised of URL and QuickStart Guide.

Bring a question or some code that's bugging you, and let's see if the
group can offer some ideas.

Afterwards, we'll continue with the "Crafting Software" series which has
User Experience/UX and F-strings as the next topic, followed by
Iteration/looping. We're moving beyond the level of basic Python, and
will pick-up the pace according to your (and everyone else's) level of
Python-skill.

Smart Iterator Challenge-week 2
(https://www.meetup.com/nzpug-auckland/events/288813698/) commences Sat
8 Oct with a new challenge mail-out, Office hours/Fire-side chat Wed 12
Oct, 1830, and closing Sun16 Oct.

The next step is to cut-through some of the complexity that even a short
piece of code can contain. Can we make things more flexible and open to
amendment or extension?

It is not too late to join. A suggested solution to week-1 will be
published as part of this week's Challenge.

Are you up to the Challenge?

Mon 10 Oct 1900 for 1930
(https://www.meetup.com/nzpug-hamilton/events/283776848/)

Ian Stewart will demo features of PySide6/Qt6, which allows you to write
Python applications with graphical user interfaces that work across all
major platforms.

Presentation Evening: Wed 19 Oct, 1800 for 1830
(https://www.meetup.com/nzpug-auckland/events/njdjssydcnbzb/). Please
RSVP for URL and more detail.

Nathan Smith wanted to 'scratch an itch' relating to his interest in the
Scrabble word-game. He struck difficulties, asked for help, figured-out
(more than) a few things along the way, and arrived at a solution. He
will recount his experiences - an ordinary Python programmer's journey
from problem to solution. Inspiration, frustration, irony, humor,
satisfaction, dogged-individual effort, and the power of community.
Sounds like a made-for-TV drama from the BBC!

Abdur-Rahman Janhangeer's involvement in the Python eco-system spreads
from his home in Mauritius to involvement in Python Software Foundation
activities. He will talk about the expressive ideas behind Creative
Coding and involving more people in both programming and Python,
introducing young people to problem-solving and systems-thinking.

Smart Iterator Challenge-week 3
(https://www.meetup.com/nzpug-auckland/events/288813734/) commences Sat
22 Oct with a new challenge mail-out, Office hours/Fire-side chat Wed 26
Oct, 1830, and closing Sun 30 Oct.

Taking advantage of last-time's more flexible solution, we'll try some
changes and extensions to see if our efforts to structure a solution
will pay-off.

It is never too late to join. A suggested solution(s) to week-2 will be
published as part of this week's Challenge.

We live in Challenging times!

Plenty of opportunity and inspiration - continuous development and fun
for you!
