Its just as well I don't air other peoples dirty laundry
but maybe some should be careful of what they IM, email or say
I don't like being in the middle
Sort it out yourself and don't involve me please
And maybe the answer is to be open minded about other peoples ideas
and reach a Compromise, grey, half way somewhere in between and if not
how about the old one agree to disagree
Is there really any right or wrong
Things change and there are always new things around
But yes sometimes the old things work very well still

I use a new method of patternmaking clothes
but I have returned to the old method of constructing blocks/slopers
with a variation I have worked out to keep things to todays silhouette/fit
An analogy

Good bye and good luck

You launch programs from files, read program configurations in files, store data in files, deliver files to clients via servers, and so on. At the core, these tools make up a filesystem -- a set of data structures that allow Linux to locate and manipulate files. Hi everyone

I recently purchased a Knoppix 3.3

It is a live CD ROM with Debian super compressed and most if not all of your programs installed

Like KOffice, Openoffice.Org kde destop qcad penguin ace card games multimedia etc etc etc

It runs form your CD ROM and boots your Computer from it

It does not effect your harddrive

It might make a great Xmas Present for non Linux users

It works as a boot disk a rescue disk and a Linux Introduction

It even works on  MS Windows XP which incidently does not have a boot or rescue disk

It will read from a hard drive and copy info to a floppy if your computer has crashed

You may be able to fix your own Linux with it

You can even install it

It decompresses to about 2.1 GB and it becomes Debian

I used it to fix my Debian/Linux box by firstly  by booting and then by rescuing files and then by installing it

It instantly configured my Epson Printer Swan Speed Demon Modem and Diamond View Scanner

If you have to take your box into Computerbank to get repaired you could at least save files to a floppy first and not loose then.  If you need to use your computer and you have to wait a couple of weeks to take it in you can use the CD until you have the time to take it in

I'm sure you have been telling all your friends and family about Linux this is a way they can use it with out touching their harddrive

You can buy Knoppix from Computerbank

Kylie how much please? If you pick up.

How much with a money Order to mail Out Please?

Which version are you selling?

You need to have a CD Rom and best to have 128MB Ram but can be used with less if you learn cheat codes

When you boot and you must have your Bios set to boot luckily both mine where. then you enter Knoppix lang=en

as a cheat code to make it go from German to Dutch

It really could get you out of trouble.  Get one!!!!

Avery

On the note of email formating. Internet best practice is to wrap at 72=20 columns which allows for a few levels of reply before causeing ugly wrapping. now as most clients can wrap messages properly this isn't such a big issue.. but it's still nice. Also kylie your email client is broken. and does not include a=20 In-Reply-To header. KSart/Multimedia/Graphics/MorePrograms/KIconEditor

Have you used this?
Its very easy.

I have found in my limited experience that the Icons seem to like to be .png's

When we had 2 Users (this time we have gone for one)
I downloaded photos pictures of us from the net and Opened them in KIcon and saved them as .png
and placed them on our USER Log on You need root password to that I'll get to that later

You can also do a google image search and download pictures and save them and Open them in KIcon and save them as a .png like you could use your modem dialup Icon and change it to a phone.  Ok I don't know the legals but don't send them to anyone as they may be copyright.  You can take your own photos with a digital or scan something in and use that

Ok changing the Icon Right button click on Icon
Left button click on Properities and then left button click on the picture of the Icon in properties you get a selction of Icons to choose from already there or left button click the radio button for other Icons and then click browse.  I hope you remember where you saved your new .png images
Click Ok for Properties Select Icon and your done you have changed your Icon

Now changing the picture of the head in User Log In
KStart/Settings/Control Center/ System Administrator/Login Manager
Hey guess what you need your root password again
Click with left button on Adminstrator mode lower left hand  a pop Window is where you put in your root password before you click go/OK look at the URL location to get an idea where this is
then click with left button on Users you can then click the picture and change it.
So you remember where you saved it?
then click apply on the bottom right hand of the screen and you are done

You can change other things here too but I'll save them for another time

GUI an alternative to Command lines

Well you taught me thank you

So don't. knoppix is reasonably up to date out of the box..
if you want a secure supported OS install DEBIAN stable. ( that means
kde 2.2 and xfree 4.2 and yes that's old) you can either have the new
shiny stuff or a secure machine not both.
Its kde 3.1.3 I want secure not new.  Why do you always think I want new?

All the above relate to java. if you don't want to use them put a # at
the start of the line in question.
They wouldn't update as they were, I don't know if I want them or not
As I said secure on the net

On the note of email formating. Internet best practice is to wrap at 72
columns which allows for a few levels of reply before causeing ugly
wrapping. now as most clients can wrap messages properly this isn't
such a big issue.. but it's still nice.
Was that to me I check Mozilla it was set on 72, I've changed to 50 now though

I'm sorry I don't understand either of you on this.  Even though this is the latest Knoppix it is still afew months old

On all computerbank shipped systems anyway.

If you install your own system then that's different ;)

Well thats funny I had to change the time on it from the Computerbank system before any way as it was wrong

Gee and maybe I'm doing Ok being able to install my own system that got the Printer and Scanner
working straight away and it only took 40 mins

I have seen postings from persons who do not have a Computerbank Computer and ohter distrabutions on this list and
what are we not alowed to experiment and try other Linux things. Not so long ago someone told me they were looking a RedHat distrabution

A lot of Techies don't use or know about GUI and I am trying right or wrong to fill a void
almost every Linux User admits that Command lines even if you are familar with DOS take years to learn

What if you just want to use things now and get things done?

There is always another option to doing things and I think the programers who make this GUI stuff would love to know people are using it

I also said how you can change the look and feel of the clock

Its just an alternative.

The rule I was given is there is no support if you put Windows on not another Debian
At least I stayed with debian its not that different

I now have a boot floppy and Knoppix to try and solve any more problems

It ment that I didn't have to take in the box to CBV and tie them up and I didn't have to lug it in 2 hours on the train and then back again
I found a way that I could be more self sufficient and I can learn from my mistakes

There is more than one way to skin a cat there is several ways to patternmake a garment There are many ways to sew it
So therefore there are many ways to use your Computer to get things done
until I or others learn more on Command lines it may be useful to know where th GUI programs are and how to use them
There are so many Graphical User Interface GUI programs on the Box CBV distro or Knoppix it seems a shame not to use them

Otherwise why are putting them on?

As a friend of mine on Luv has just this minute emailed me its the GUI's that will get the general Public using Linux and
he thought that in the last few years that Linux GUI are getting better than Microsoft which he has to use at work

so I will continue to post GUI's to help Newbies or other crossing over from Microsoft someone might find it doing a google search

Hi Avery,
This will change the time, but not fix your underlying problem.
To change the timezone so dst changes automatically, in Debian from a command line, type tzselect (or tzconfig or tzsetup), and select the appropriate options. you must be logged in as root.
I am sorry, but I don't know enough about kde to know if/where the gui option would be.

I remember when I first started using Linux, the command line was not easy, however with experience it does get easier. As I mentioned earlier I do not know GUI as I don't often use it, my main interaction with Linux is connecting over the internet with SSH for command line stuff (It beats ANY windows remote administration as I can do things 5 times quicker!)

Thats the way I learnt, at one stage with no help I must have installed Linux 5 times in 2 weeks, as I kept breaking things (Well, I thought they were broken)

The GUI is not the only problem with Linux vs Microsoft, its compatibility but the OSS programmers are getting close though.

Unfortunately - I need to know a little more about Global Cam - ie what is the specific model number? brand / manufacturer... any info on this would help. Next in your kDE control centre under the peripherals tab - there is a digital camera option. In the right pane - you will see a little camera icon at the top - click this and a dialogue box will appear - this box is magical - in that - it shows you a list of all cameras that work under linux. Usually usb cameras - if supported - will work. With respect to kghostview - I am not a fan - I suggest when viewing the attachments - you right click - and choose open with - then type xpdf xpdf is a better pdf viewer for the linux system - in that 95% of the time it works for most pdfs. Hi
I hope this doesn't get bumped off the list for being to big
Anyway funny this as my next GUI posting it was on Cameras supported by Debian this often comes up as a request

So I was going to say left button click(kde) KStart/Settings/Control Center/Pheripherals/Digital Cameras
Click on the Camera Icon and the list pops up
           (Icewm) Icewm Start/Applications/System/KControl/Pheripherals/Digital Camera

I've spent hours typing this out and its from my Knoppix CD so it could be different to other distros.
This may not be accurate with my typing either and I don't claim this to be true and accurate nor uptodate
This is a starting pint and a guide which you may print off to take bargin hunting

I saw a Dolphin Jazz I've looked at at Dick Smith and the Version has a flash but its not on the list
You will have to check it yourself to see whether it is serial or USB

Funny I was doing this whilst Kylie Posted

cheers Avery
It did get booted for being to big
Ok I have typed out the list viewed as above

I don't know if this is anygood or not but the current Kmart Catalogue starting Nov1 Saturday on page 7 has a NetComm external modem for $78
Its 56K V90
Now why I bring this up is once I was in OfficeWorks and they had a ADSL modem and the accomanying CD had Linex on it as well.
Now I have just had a look at there site they are based in Sydney
http://www.netcomm.com.au/one/dhp_i.html
AM5685 - InternetModem 56K V90
looks the same as in the Kmart Catalogue it may not be
It has a serial cable it come with Window drivers but it has AT Command set compatable
I don't know if that means you can set it up using At Commands on Linux

You can email them to find out if its Comptatable you need Pentium 32 MG Ram and 80MG fee on Harddrive
http://www.netcomm.com.au/one/support/specification/AM5685_IntMod_info.pdf
Of course being Kmart if you rushed in and bought it and it didn't work with your system you could always take it back for a refund Kmart are very good at that i bought a Microphone for a Computer from Dandenong and I couldn't get it too work and a Cable TV cable that didn't fit and returned it to Narre Warren and got a refund to my bank within a week to my credit card

So if you are in the market next week for a modem this may be worth looking at?

Show them your Computer 2.Buy or burn them knoppix (Available from Computerbank 3.Buy an Open Office CD for Windows 4. Get them to download onto their Windows Boxes programs like OpenOffice.org, Xchat, Mozilla and Opera there are probably more but these ones are also available for Windows and I believe that Mozilla is better than Outlook Have you thought about giving or donating Knoppix to your local school or TAFE. How about sending it to your local member of Parliament both state and commonwealth. How about donating one to your local charity/Community group? When I work out how to burn it as an ISO Image, thats what I am planning to do I'm going to test it on a CD-RW and then burn it to a CD-R I didn't know the difference until a couple of weeks ago A CD-RW ( rewriteable) is like a bit floppy and you can save and remove info and add to it A CD-R (recordable) is a once only permanent disk So you want to have your 703MB ready to go on it Maybe others have better explanations I would save bits onto a Rewriteable and then when full and I'm happy with it Transfer it to a Recordable Testing how to burn use a Rewriteable and then when you know the method you can then use the recordable Like for Knoppix when I tried to burn knoppix it wouldn't book as I didn't use Nero and ISO but as I used a rewritable I can remove it and try again Avery From hortnfash at dodo.com.au Wed Oct 1 21:07:02 2003 From: hortnfash at dodo.com.au (Maxwell&de Brouwer) Date: Wed Oct 1 21:07:02 2003 Subject: [Cbsupport] Dirty laundry Message-ID: <3F7AD10C.3070100@dodo.com.au> Its amazing how you can be used, when 2 people or sides are having a spat Its just as well I don't air other peoples dirty laundry but maybe some should be careful of what they IM, email or say I don't like being in the middle Sort it out yourself and don't involve me please And maybe the answer is to be open minded about other peoples ideas and reach a Compromise, grey, half way somewhere in between and if not how about the old one agree to disagree Is there really any right or wrong Things change and there are always new things around But yes sometimes the old things work very well still I use a new method of patternmaking clothes but I have returned to the old method of constructing blocks/slopers with a variation I have worked out to keep things to todays silhouette/fit An analogy Good bye and good luck Avery -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You launch programs from files, read program configurations in files, store data in files, deliver files to clients via servers, and so on. Therefore, the tools Linux provides for manipulating files are extremely important to overall system performance. At the core, these tools make up a filesystem -- a set of data structures that allow Linux to locate and manipulate files. Several Linux native filesystems exist, the most important of these being the Second Extended File System (ext2fs), the Third Extended File System (ext3fs), the Reiser File System (ReiserFS), the Journaled File System (JFS), and XFS. The filesystem you use will affect your computer's overall performance and suitability for specific tasks. -- ?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ( that means kde 2.2 and xfree 4.2 and yes that's old) you can either have the new shiny stuff or a secure machine not both. > just to patch for the Internet and security > If I can remove this from the source list and if I don't need I can do > that too You can just comment things you don't need/want using # > > # Java > > deb ftp://ftp.au.debian.org/pub/languages/java/linux/debian woody main > non-free > > deb-src ftp://ftp.au.debian.org/pub/languages/java/linux/debian woody > main non-free > > deb ftp://ftp.au.debian.org/pub/languages/java/linux/debian unstable > main non-free > > deb-src ftp://ftp.au.debian.org/pub/languages/java/linux/debian unstable > main non-free > > # deb http://people.debian.org/~sgybas/jdk13 > All the above relate to java. if you don't want to use them put a # at the start of the line in question. On the note of email formating. Internet best practice is to wrap at 72 columns which allows for a few levels of reply before causeing ugly wrapping. now as most clients can wrap messages properly this isn't such a big issue.. but it's still nice. Also kylie your email client is broken. and does not include a In-Reply-To header. Its very easy. I have found in my limited experience that the Icons seem to like to be .png's When we had 2 Users (this time we have gone for one) I downloaded photos pictures of us from the net and Opened them in KIcon and saved them as .png and placed them on our USER Log on You need root password to that I'll get to that later You can also do a google image search and download pictures and save them and Open them in KIcon and save them as a .png like you could use your modem dialup Icon and change it to a phone. Ok I don't know the legals but don't send them to anyone as they may be copyright. You can take your own photos with a digital or scan something in and use that Ok changing the Icon Right button click on Icon Left button click on Properities and then left button click on the picture of the Icon in properties you get a selction of Icons to choose from already there or left button click the radio button for other Icons and then click browse. If you get above 95% you may have trouble booting up again and get a modprobe error. This where Knoppix could be useful as a boot up or rescue disk Remember you can buy one from Computerbank Take note that image files like .bmp or .jpeg or.png etc can take up lots of room So get them off if you start getting tight fits. I personally have decide not to save very much on the hardrive and am saving to floppies instead I am also keeping my emails at a limit (I use Mozilla) I have also tighten up the cache in Konqueror and Mozilla to very low so from experience watch the Harddrive and get help before you get to 94% regards Avery -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Not so long ago someone told me they were looking a RedHat distrabution and apparently CBV looks at other possiblities, maybe nothing is suitable at the moment, but maybe one day there could be There seems to be a gap for Newbies information and getting thing just done. A lot of Techies don't use or know about GUI and I am trying right or wrong to fill a void almost every Linux User admits that Command lines even if you are familar with DOS take years to learn What if you just want to use things now and get things done? There is always another option to doing things and I think the programers who make this GUI stuff would love to know people are using it I also said how you can change the look and feel of the clock Its just an alternative. The rule I was given is there is no support if you put Windows on not another Debian At least I stayed with debian its not that different I now have a boot floppy and Knoppix to try and solve any more problems It ment that I didn't have to take in the box to CBV and tie them up and I didn't have to lug it in 2 hours on the train and then back again I found a way that I could be more self sufficient and I can learn from my mistakes There is more than one way to skin a cat there is several ways to patternmake a garment There are many ways to sew it So therefore there are many ways to use your Computer to get things done until I or others learn more on Command lines it may be useful to know where th GUI programs are and how to use them There are so many Graphical User Interface GUI programs on the Box CBV distro or Knoppix it seems a shame not to use them Or to know that they are there. Otherwise why are putting them on? As a friend of mine on Luv has just this minute emailed me its the GUI's that will get the general Public using Linux and he thought that in the last few years that Linux GUI are getting better than Microsoft which he has to use at work so I will continue to post GUI's to help Newbies or other crossing over from Microsoft someone might find it doing a google search I am sure it will help someone Avery -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Now I have just had a look at there site they are based in Sydney > http://www.netcomm.com.au/one/dhp_i.html *AM5685 - InternetModem 56K V90* looks the same as in the Kmart Catalogue it may not be It has a serial cable it come with Window drivers but it has AT Command set compatable I don't know if that means you can set it up using At Commands on Linux You can email them to find out if its Comptatable you need Pentium 32 MG Ram and 80MG fee on Harddrive > http://www.netcomm.com.au/one/support/specification/AM5685_IntMod_info.pdf Of course being Kmart if you rushed in and bought it and it didn't work with your system you could always take it back for a refund Kmart are very good at that i bought a Microphone for a Computer from Dandenong and I couldn't get it too work and a Cable TV cable that didn't fit and returned it to Narre Warren and got a refund to my bank within a week to my credit card So if you are in the market next week for a modem this may be worth looking at? Show them your Computer 2.Buy or burn them knoppix (Available from Computerbank 3.Buy an Open Office CD for Windows 4. Get them to download onto their Windows Boxes programs like OpenOffice.org, Xchat, Mozilla and Opera there are probably more but these ones are also available for Windows and I believe that Mozilla is better than Outlook Have you thought about giving or donating Knoppix to your local school or TAFE. How about sending it to your local member of Parliament both state and commonwealth. How about donating one to your local charity/Community group? When I work out how to burn it as an ISO Image, thats what I am planning to do I'm going to test it on a CD-RW and then burn it to a CD-R I didn't know the difference until a couple of weeks ago A CD-RW ( rewriteable) is like a bit floppy and you can save and remove info and add to it A CD-R (recordable) is a once only permanent disk So you want to have your 703MB ready to go on it Maybe others have better explanations I would save bits onto a Rewriteable and then when full and I'm happy with it Transfer it to a Recordable Testing how to burn use a Rewriteable and then when you know the method you can then use the recordable Like for Knoppix when I tried to burn knoppix it wouldn't book as I didn't use Nero and ISO but as I used a rewritable I can remove it and try again Avery
