Chris,
You deadline appears too tight for my suggestion, but I will make it
anyway... this mob
http://www.asusnotebooks.com.au/notebook/refurbished-laptops.htm have
4GB core i3 refurbished (ie near new) laptops with full 12 month factory
warranty in the $400 to $500 bracket. You could try ringing them and
asking about Darwin shops or contacts. 4GB core i5 are in the $500-600
range. They are based in Hobart, with the following contacts
Phone:
(02) 8999 2077 Sydney
(07) 3177 2077 Brisbane
(03) 9016 7888 Melbourne
(03) 6111 3131 Hobart
Their machines tend to come with variations on the theme of Win7
preinstalled. In my experience it is still pretty rare to find Linux
pre-installed, though these days it is not hard to self-install Linux on
a laptop.

OTOH, Mac laptops come 'pre-installed' without Windows, and you'd be
able find one quickly in Darwin. A basic 13" MacBook pro comes with 4GB
ram and core i5 RRP about $1400

I recently got a relatively up-to-date 10" netbook (specs: AMD dual
core c-50 1GHz, HDMI, USB 3, AMD Fusion "accelerated processing unit,"
which include x86 CPU cores on the same die as Radeon GPUs (graphics
processing units)) from
http://www.asusnotebooks.com.au/notebook/refurbished-netbooks.htm for
$237.95 delivered to Yuendumu in the bush. It is now running 'without
windows' and I'm pretty happy with it so far.

I'm hoping to buy a laptop in Darwin, today (Friday 13 April), or
tomorrow if
possible. After that I'm flying out. And of course, I want one without
Windows on it.

I'll ask at the shops, and try the classifieds for second hand, but I
figured someone on this list might know something.

(I want something newish with 4GB RAM+, but it depends on price. Core i3
or
higher is preferred but if it's cheap, like ~$300, then an older CPU
like
Core Duo is possible. And I'd prefer new with warranty... but not if it
means paying for Windows.)

All suggestions and leads appreciated.
