Hi Edan

Face book sounds like a good media to use for ASLUG.

It is coming towards the second Wednesday of the month again.
Could we have a get-together next Wednesday(8th of June) please?

Regards
Feng

Hi all,

Sorry for delayed continuation of this thread.. My original post got caught up in moderation..

I think we were talking about ways to promote the virtues of Linux in the community and get a few more Asluggers to be part of the discussions etc ..

Hi all,

Was good to catch up with everyone last night.

Not being a command line guru, personally I enjoy talking about the ideas of "open source culture" and the wider implications of different licencing systems in general... (if I can improve my practical linux skills - bonus)

Anyway, thanks for the positive feedback and comments around the "Common Territory" project I am working on. I'll continue to keep the group updated and maybe there will be potential for collaboration down the track :)

Bill and Feng - I reckon it would be great to "see whos out there" but coming from a website dev background, I tend to subscribe to the "build it and those interested will come" principle. For example, if ASLUG was to have a little stall at the Markets, great, but I think it would be good to demonstrate "technology in action" as part of it.

Thus, if others on this list/in the general community see that things are active and ASLUG is helping to facilitate interesting conversations/ providing useful N00B advice/ working on interesting projects, I am sure things will grow out of that.

Feng - Hmm in terms of communication methods.. well email here is good, but forums would be helpful to document and discuss in more detail..

I guess it depends on the outcome req'd.. For awareness raising - dare I ask the question - is facebook a possibility? (such as MelbourneLUG https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=146247927013).

:)

Hi all

Thank you for the email, Ben.
That is great stuff.

Here are some of the questions we could have a think about?

First we need to figure out what is consist of ASLUGger community.
Let's just say
ASLUGger community=
group of people + special interests + regular communication(in person or online)

The "what" part of the questions are raised in Ben's email.

What kind of people do we want to attract?
What special interests should be we define?
What communication methods do we want to use(email, forum, face to face and etc)?

And there is the "HOW" part of the questions.

How can we attract the kind of people we want?
How can we develop the "special interests" we defined?
How should we organize the communication methods(setting up forum, finding venues)?

Supporting "Tech n00bz" is essential.(Aren't we all a n00bz in some area anyway)?
Getting support as a n00bz in many areas is exactly one of my motives.

Money is an issue and a sensitive one, too.
We don't want anyone having to spend any money they don't want to.
Can we get around the issue for the time being( as we don't have any)?

Things we have:
Venue, computers, projectors, open source platforms and the spirit
to do things at low or no cost( at least we have achieved not having to pay MS).

Anyway,
I enjoyed last night.
Good to catch up.
Feng

Hi everyone,
I decided to belt out an email tonight, hopefully keep some of the
momentum from the LUG meeting going.

We DO want more ASLUGgers but who do we want them to be? Do we want
every Alice Springs Linux user? Every computer power-user (whatever
that means)? What about people with Android phones and Linksys routers
but use Vista to flash 3rd-party roms to them? Frankly I get what I
want from the ASLUG meetings, I get my nerd on! Still I put forward
the Todd Market stall idea because I can't imagine people turning up
to anything really, regarding Linux (who doesn't already). So
passers-by seeing Firefox, and VLC running on hardware can think to
themselves "why in hell do I pay for the underlying OS when all the
stuff I run is FOSS?". From there it seems like trivial step to
replace "Windows+Firefox+Thunderbird+MediaPlayer+VLC" with "Mint 9
LTS+Firefox+Thunderbird+Totem+VLC". It would also give us (ME!!!) an
ASLUG activity to participate in twice a month (three times a month if
you count the LUG as well...)

Now there might be clouds to this idea that I can't see past the
silver lining. Supporting "teh n00bz" is one right off the bat, but
thats kind of what I think a LUG is for amirite?

And money, I don't have any and I don't want any of yours! Do we get
any from linux.au? Or any other FOSS organisation? Do we have to (try
and) sell Windows editions of LibreOffice, GIMP, OpenArena, etc, etc,
etc, to cover the costs of our stall? Etc, etc, etc...

Anyway discuss!

Bill
