Imagine the savings that could be made if [the Gummint] sat down, looked 
at what they needed from office software and then employed local 
software developers to enhance OpenOffice.org to work as they need it

  * 'Own' the product [...] for as long as needed

  * Have pumped money into the local economy [...]

  * Have a product that meets their needs. [...]

  * Have opened up more choice with regards to operating systems [...]

[...] OpenOffice.org-1.1 [...] has an excellent word processor, 
spreadsheet, presentation package and database so there shouldn't be 
too much missing that government would nee d to pay to have developed.

Moving towards the local development of software would have benefits for 
Australia both now and in the future.
