Why is it a poor showing? A bunch of interested people are having some
fun... Great!

What sort of things could LA do? LA doesn't have local presence to put on
parties and such, that's up to the local communities around Australia. We
can encourage all we want, but we can't make people do things. :-) Maybe
some "Congratulations Debian" marketing? Not sure that sounds like LA's kind
of thing, though.

Suggestions? I'm not sure how much LA can really facilitate here...
