[Cbsupport] Ideas from a great person re cbsupport list and computerbank chatchannels - remaining anon for now...

HI all,

Below are some great starting points - and a way to move forward re setting up guidelines for cbsupport and computerbank chat channels... please send comments to this list and I will collate them and send them to our anon contributor. :) A report will ensue and from this we can expect to make some changes... :) Better information to go into training manuals and on our websites.

Now over to the brainstorm department... :)

Cheers,

Kylie

From anon...

_On IRC channels_

A group of people were discussing on Xchat about
Xchat, raising issuses, solving difficulties and setting
proticols and rules

One of the biggest issues was idle time

Another was swearing and rudeness

Another was timetables for specific discussions/topics
notified in advance to CBsupport lists

another was to divide the chat line into 2

Another isssuse was socialising versus computer/linux
topics

Suggestions were:
dealing with idle times to quit or mark away or a
message every three hours
A reminder in the topic chanel
2 sites one to socialise one for computers
Use gaim for socialising rather than Xchat
Use Gaim for private messages rather than Xchat going
into a private room and being stuck there
Timetable times for specific topics times for
socialising time for help?
What is Xchat for the purpose?
What outcomes do you want to see?
What about rules ie. regarding language or use of?
Where do you find instructions or help? Nobody to be ignored
Respect and know that everyone is diverse and at
different levels
No judgements
Involvement no lerking or observing- involvement even
if you just say hello I'm here to observe to learn but
letting people know that you are there and why your
there
Welcome others when they come online so they know

I wonder how many CB members know about or how to use
Xchat?

Please put your ideas forward this is your chance to
develop Xchat to a model that you want
Please provide submissions on how you would like to
see X chat to grow and develop into a better more
useful tool

Submissions by all members of Xchat and cbsupport
encouraged and welcome
Please provide your ideas before the 11/05/2003 a
collation of ideas well be submitted to cbsupport lists
for a vote (or decision) later on. Please sumbit this is your
chance to out your views forward there are no rights
or wrongs there is only opinons which are subjective

_On the topic of the cbsupport list_

A small group of members of computerbank discussed the
idea of proticols or rules and regulations for
cbsupport

Could all receivers of cbsupport lists supply ideas
for proticols in a giant brainstorming session...

Some suggestions for cbsupport were

* Everyone, to stay on the list needs to submit
something about computer,linux,computerbank
peripherials, sites or what your using the computer
for and keep involved or leave (You can always come back
later) once every month,2 months or 3 months?

* no rudeness or swearing in text

* in subject line basic:, or intermediate:, or super
techno:
they would only be used as a guess from the author it
would be subjective to what level something would be
but examples are:
basic: web sites to start
Super techno: config server

* dividing into 2 lists 1st for learners and 2nd
slightly to very advanced

* used for sharing of information exchanging ideas of
software websites what works what doesn't opions on
software that you use how to use things

* provide tips, like when writing a text edit/select
all/change text colour to 75%-85% grey so as to save
on black ink with the printer and gives a softer look
to document. Also if you have a 3in1 colour toner
change use of colours to have an even use of colour so
as to replace tone when all is empty not just when the
red is only empty cost effective!

* how to's eg.using the right button of your mouse
how to use wine * everyone to be involved no lerkers or observers
* no judgements everyone is a different levels
* respect for everyone
* clearly defined goal to share knowledge and promote
linux and growth in your use of computer
* What outcomes or uses do you have intenion for your
computer Or what are your interests This should be
diverse and interesting
eg. knitting software
cross stich software
storage of family photos and documents
filing my recipes
games
children
writing progams tax
starting a small business
using linux in a large corp
sending emails
writing a book
art
horticulture
So what software will do these jobs
* the Computerbank training manual to be on the
internet soon

This is your computerbank what direction do you want
the lists to go to and now is the time to put your
views across now everyone is expected to supply an
idea for protocols.

Can you please provide them by Sunday 4th May 2003 and
submit to list. They will al be collated with the
intention that everyone votes on them through the
lists

End anon suggestions ....
